Political cooperation
Diplomatic relations between Belarus and Iran were established on March 18, 1993. On March 8, 1998 the Embassy of Belarus was opened in Tehran. Since February 2001, the Embassy of Iran has been working in Minsk.
Top level contacts
A high level of political contacts between Belarus and Iran has been reached over the past two decades. Two visits of the President of the Republic of Belarus to Iran (1998 and 2006) and two visits of the President of Iran to Belarus (2004 and 2007) were held. On July 9, 2015, the President of the Republic of Belarus met with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the sidelines of BRICS and SCO summits in Ufa. The heads of state of Belarus and Iran met on June 9, 2018 at the SCO summit in Qingdao and February 14, 2019 in Sochi together with the presidents of Russia and Turkey as part of a tripartite summit on the crisis in Syria.
On September 16, 2021, the President of the Republic of Belarus mwt with Iranian President on the sidelines of the SCO GCC summit in Dushanbe.
Foreign ministries cooperation
In 2016-2018 countries implemented the Cooperation Program of the Foreign Ministries that was signed in February 2016 in Tehran. Political inter-ministerial consultations at the level of deputy heads of ministries of foreign affairs are being held on a regular basis. On July 10, 2019 Tehran hosted the fifth round of political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The heads of Belarusian and Iranian delegations Andrei Dapkiunas and Ali Araqchi discussed international and regional issues, emphasized the need for active development of bilateral cooperation.
On September 23, 2021, as part of the participation in the events of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus V.Makei met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran H.Amir Abdollahian.
Inter-parliamentary cooperation
In February and August 2017, the Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus M.Myasnikovich officially visited Iran. On September 6-8, 2018 the Iranian Parliamentary delegation headed by the Chairman of the Assembly of the Islamic Council of Iran Ali Larijani visited Belarus. The head of the Iranian delegation met with the President of the Republic of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko, the Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich and the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko.
There is an interparliamentary friendship group of Belarus and Iran. On June 11-12, 2019 the delegation of Belarusian parliamentary working group on cooperation with Iran headed by delegate of the House of Representatives of Belarus Peter Solovyev visited Tehran. During the visit meetings with the Chairman of the Islamic Council Assembly Ali Larijani and the co-chairman of parliamentary friendship group Ramezan-Ali Sobhanifar were held.
On August 5, 2021, during a visit to Tehran, a meeting was held between the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly Vladimir Andreichenko.. with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran E. Raisi, as well as with the Chairman of the Assembly of the Islamic Council M.-B. Ghalibaf.
On July 12-16, 2021, the Iranian parliamentary delegation visited Belarus, headed by the head of the working group of the Assembly of the Islamic Council of Iran on cooperation with the Parliament of Belarus A. Amui.
High level exchange of visits
In 2017, Iran was visited by Deputy Minister of Health Shilo V.D., First Deputy Minister of Industry Svidersky G.B., Chairman of the State Customs Committee Senko Y.A., Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Brylo I.V., the delegation of the «Belneftekhim» Concern and CJSC «Belarusian Oil Company». Meetings of working groups on industry, agriculture and transport were also held.
On January 22-23, 2018 the 14th meeting of the Mixed Belarusian-Iranian Commission for Economic Cooperation was held, which resulted in the signing of the Roadmap on the development of cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and the Islamic Republic of Iran for 2018-2020.
Collaboration at the international level
Belarus and Iran closely cooperate on international platforms, providing mutual support to countries’ representatives in such international organizations as ECOSOC, UNESCO, UN HRC, Universal Postal Union, etc.
Interregional interaction
Twin-city relations are established between Minsk and Tehran, Gomel region and Mazandaran region, Mogilev and Tabriz.
